Day 2 of our recycling crafts projects!
Using our same source of information (http://des.nh.gov/organization/divisions/water/wmb/coastal/trash/documents/marine_debris.pdf), I've learned that it takes 450 years for your plastic water bottles to decompose! 450 years!!!! We learned a few weeks ago that plastic bottles are unhealthy for you to drink water out of! The plastic begins wearing down and infiltrates your water. You could be drinking plastic particles with your water! (Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/14/reuse-plastic-water-bottle_n_5671681.html)
The best solutions are to use a BPA-free plastic bottle, a metal bottle, or another travel mug. Whenever possible, refill your water bottle using the water option at places like Circle K, McDonald's, or your favorite place. A lot of airports have also started to set up water filtration systems in favor of using reusable bottles instead of plastic bottles! Another solution to reduce our plastic bottle waste is to recycle! Several places throughout Holbrook, Winslow, Snowflake, and Show Low will take the plastic, melt it, and reuse it for other projects. We decided to give new life to the water bottles by making them into crafts!
Water Bottle Desk Organizer
Step 1: Drink water and let dry.
Step 2: At the label, cut across.
Step 3: Decorate the cup with decorative duct tape, stickers, or drawings.
Step 4: Put your pencils inside and enjoy!
Several students use the top part of the water bottle to create flowers or spinners! What a great use of the bottle!
