Red Ribbon Week--

Day 1: Hippie Day.

Most of these kids, and their parents, aren't even old enough to remember the "Hippie Days", but in true Americana fashion we use pictures and movies to show us the way. Here are some great outfits from our class.

Day 2: Crazy Hair Day

For most of us, all we had to do was roll out of bed and come to school. But some people in our class and in other classes really put a lot of work into their crazy hair!

Day 3: Wear Red Day!
I think we all own a few red things in our wardrobe, but there were some people who had red everything! They were really representing Red Day!

Day 4: Hat Day

Hat day was a fun experience and we had a lot of great hats! My favorite was Jadin's! That shark hat was awesome!

Day 5: Team Jersey Day.

I had to represent the team jersey day with my favorite player, Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics. Of course we had some other teams represented as well! Holbrook, Cardinals, DBacks, etc! Go Team Go!!!!

All in all we had a great week!!!

Fitness Day

As a culmination to our Red Ribbon Week, the teachers at Hulet put together a fitness afternoon. During this time, each teacher was managing a sport or area. While I, of course, manned the volleyball area with Mr. Hansen, there were several activities outdoors to choose from.

Thanks to Ellie for this delicious cookie. It was seriously the BEST cookie I had ever eaten in my life! Now I've been around a long time (28years) and I've eaten a lot of cookies (has to be over a million), so I think I know my way around cookies. It was delicious! Yum! Yum!!!!

Holes

To cap off our amazing literature novel, we were able to watch the movie Holes today. I am a big fan of the novel version of Holes, but I can't deny that the movie version is very accurate as well.

The movie isn't EXACTLY accurate with the book, and that caused a lot of us to question the main character, Stanley. In the novel version, Stanley is larger than the other kids his age. He loses lots of weight and gains muscle while at Camp Green Lake. It's building his character through these trials that increases Stanley's confidence and makes his character grow. I think the kids and I both felt that Stanley not being large, like he is in the books, was kind of hard to grasp. Stanley's character being bigger than the average 12 year old is what made Stanley have issues with his confidence. Without that weight factor, Stanley seemed to lack the character depth. Shia LeBouf, who plays Stanley, actually did a really good acting job. As we watched the movie version it was easy to get over the fact that Stanley movie version was not the same as Stanley book version.

Overall though, the movie version aligned very well with the novel version. It even had that added effect of the actor's personal spin on the characters demeanor and dialect. I personally loved Sigourney Weaver as the warden. She fit that role perfectly. The kids enjoyed the parts where the warden would repeatedly ask, "Excuse me?" Not because she didn't hear them the first time, but because she wanted them to change their answer. The characters, of course, just repeated what they said the first time causing the warden to ask again. The kids were in stitches!

Special thanks to Natasha and Cameron for bringing awesome snacks for us to have during the movie! What a special surprise!!!

Check out the photo below of us relaxing and enjoying the movie!

Family Reading Night

Every story is an adventure. As a teacher I enjoy reading novels to my students. I think the story can speak to you for many different reasons.  And while every book might not directly relate to your life, you can always take something from the story and make it your own. The 5th grade staff had the perfect story with Little Red Riding Hood. We decided to take the story a step further from just reading and answering questions to having the children and parents jump into the story with us. The answers ranged from the typical (run, jump, dance) to the hilarious! (I especially loved Red Riding Hood moonwalking!) Acting out a story is just one of the many ways that you can get your child involved in literature.

The wolf is scaring Little Red Riding Hood! Good thing Woodcutter has an ax!

Oh no!! The Wolf is eating Little Red!

The Woodcutter is slicing open the Wolf to rescue Red and Grandma!

I hope all the students and parents enjoyed Family Reading Night as much as I did!

I'm so lucky to work with Mr. Wright, Mr. Bokker, and Mr. Ferguson. Not only are they great colleagues, but they are also good friends.
