Dr. Seuss Celebration

March 2nd is officially known as Dr. Seuss Day! If you've been hiding under a rock, you might NOT know who he is. Dr. Seuss is an imaginative storyteller who uses made-up words and crazy characters to teach lessons to us through stories.
Some of my personal favorite Dr. Seuss books are: "Oh! The Places You'll Go" which not only tells of how to use your imagination, but also about what lies ahead in your life if only you believe in yourself.

"There's a Wocket in My Pocket" is silly and imaginative. We've all wondered if there really were monsters in the closet, under the bed, and in the cellar. If you ask Dr. Seuss he'll tell you that there's a woset in your closet and a gellar in the cellar. To me this story embodies all the fun you can have with imagination.

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas" Let me just ask. Who DOESN'T love this book? Such a classic that is good all year long, not just at Christmas. The Grinch of course learns the most valuable lesson of all and that is that celebrating comes from being together with the people you love, not presents.

"Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose" In this story Dr. Seuss introduces us to a moose who accepts everyone and everything no matter their shape or size. It's a great example of how we should respect one another and always be able to make new friends.

Here are some pictures from our Dr. Seuss celebration and hats! We had such a great time celebrating Dr. Seuss on March 2nd. But Dr. Seuss can be celebrated at any time! Even adults love Dr. Seuss. So climb up together and read!!

Community Service
Community service is a good thing to do. It is a lot of hard work, and it is kind of everyone to take their time and help the community. When I do community service I feel happy, joyful, and good inside. I believe community service is an excellent thing to do. We always do things for ourselves, and never think of what other people need. We need to live in a better world.
When you put good things into the community, then you get good things out of your community. So, lets say you help some one out in your community; in the end, they will help you out someday. This is why we should help out in our community. It’s very important. If we didn’t care, then there would be trash every where and no one would do anything about it.
By helping out in the community, don’t you get a feeling of the butterflies in your stomach? I know I did, when I made valentines day card for the senior center and this made me happy. Everyone would be proud of themselves. At the end of the day, they will feel good that they helped out. I think of it this way, once you start helping out the community, then other people will join in. Even one person doing community service would be helping.
This could also help if someone is looking for a job in the future and in an interview, if they ask “What are you proud of?” you can always say you have done community service.
Some people say helping out the community is great. They say they have felt joyful feelings. So, helping out the community is really important. This is why I believe community service is a wonderful thing. It’s a nice thing to do.

Community Service

Community service is when you help someone with something and don’t ask for anything in return. When I do community service I feel happy, good, joyful, and excited.
I felt happy when I helped an elderly carry in groceries. When I saw her struggle I knew that she needed some help. After I was done she thanked me and called me sweetie. I was so happy I could help.
I felt excited when I made my teacher’s brother a Valentine’s Day card. He was happy he got them. He shared them with his friends. They all thanked me and my class mates and sent us a video.
I felt joyful when I cleaned up. Sometimes I go outside and clean up. I pick up all of the trash and rake the leaves. When I pick up trash I make the world a better place.
I felt good when I offered to clean someone’s house. She offered to pay me but I said no. She said thanks for offering to clean her house. I also feel good when I help my family, when they're sick. I know they appreciate it because they say thank you to me.
I think community service is really good, everyone should do it. Community service is great, give it a chance! It brings people together.

D.A.R.E.

D.A.R.E. is a new program this year being taught in our classroom. We are getting to know about saying NO to drugs, alcohol, and bad peer pressure. We are also learning the dangers of consuming drugs and alcohol. Officer Olson from the Holbrook Police Department comes to our classroom every Wednesday to help us learn about all the harmful substances there are! We've so far learned about the harmful effects of alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, and other illegal drugs.

Pictured below we are acting out scenarios. One partner is the peer who is applying pressure while the other partner is learning how to handle saying no.

We are so grateful to Officer Olson for coming to teach our class all about D.A.R.E!!

A Video From Ryan

As part of our community service, we sent Valentine's Day cards to my brother, Ryan, and his company. They are currently stationed overseas. My brother was so overwhelmed by the act of kindness that he wanted to make a video of appreciation. It meant a lot for the kids to see a sign of appreciation!

He is currently working on a video detailing some of his daily jobs. But until he gets approval from his CO that is on hold.

In the meantime, here is a video of appreciation.
Here is his youtube video:
