Earth Day 2015

We only have one Earth! We must take care of it!

Our week-long science unit explored recycling and how to care for our planet! As a culmination event, the 5th graders from Hulet took a walking field trip down the streets of Holbrook in an attempt to clean up our community!

Take a look:

Recycle Crafts--Day 3: Shoe Box Crafts

When you buy a new pair of shoes, what happens to the shoe box? Do you throw it away? Recycle it? Our class took shoe boxes and created new crafts with them.

Although it takes significantly less time for cardboard to decompose, only 2 months, (http://behealthyandrelax.com/2007/11/how-long-does-it-take-to-decompose/), you can recycle shoe boxes into new ideas and crafts. We made guitars and picture frames!

To make a guitar:
1. Cut the lid of the guitar into a circle.
2.  Add rubber bands around the box.
3. Cut a hole in one end of the box.
4. Add a paper towel roll.
5. Tape together.
6. Strum and Enjoy!

To make a picture frame:
1. Cut off the bottom portion of the shoe box.
2. Outline the size picture you want to add.
3. Color, decorate the edges of your picture frame.
4. Add picture!

Recycle Crafts--Water Bottle Pencil Organizer

Day 2 of our recycling crafts projects!

Using our same source of information (http://des.nh.gov/organization/divisions/water/wmb/coastal/trash/documents/marine_debris.pdf), I've learned that it takes 450 years for your plastic water bottles to decompose! 450 years!!!! We learned a few weeks ago that plastic bottles are unhealthy for you to drink water out of! The plastic begins wearing down and infiltrates your water. You could be drinking plastic particles with your water! (Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/14/reuse-plastic-water-bottle_n_5671681.html)

The best solutions are to use a BPA-free plastic bottle, a metal bottle, or another travel mug. Whenever possible, refill your water bottle using the water option at places like Circle K, McDonald's, or your favorite place. A lot of airports have also started to set up water filtration systems in favor of using reusable bottles instead of plastic bottles! Another solution to reduce our plastic bottle waste is to recycle! Several places throughout Holbrook, Winslow, Snowflake, and Show Low will take the plastic, melt it, and reuse it for other projects. We decided to give new life to the water bottles by making them into crafts!

Water Bottle Desk Organizer
Step 1: Drink water and let dry.
Step 2: At the label, cut across.
Step 3: Decorate the cup with decorative duct tape, stickers, or drawings.
Step 4: Put your pencils inside and enjoy!

Several students use the top part of the water bottle to create flowers or spinners! What a great use of the bottle!

Recycle Crafts--Milk Carton Windmill

Have you ever wondered where trash goes? How long it takes to decompose?
According to the National Parks Service Mote Marine Lab in Sarasota, Florida, it takes 3 months for a wax covered milk carton to decompose. (Source: http://des.nh.gov/organization/divisions/water/wmb/coastal/trash/documents/marine_debris.pdf) Can you believe that!? If Hulet students drink 1 carton of milk a day, that's over 200 milk cartons in the landfill. These milk cartons won't decompose until 3 months from now. In that time (roughly 60 days), over 12,000 more milk cartons will have entered the land fill!

So, how can we help the environment? One alternative is asking the school (specifically our supplier of milk, Shamrock Farms) to use recyclable plastic instead of waxy milk cartons. Another alternative is to recycle your cartons! Using this website (http://www.recyclecartons.com/), I've located a cardboard recycling place in Show Low. There used to be another recycle station in Winslow too. In Snowflake, we have a recyclables station next to the library! A final alternative for reusing that milk carton is by creating a new project from it! We used our milk cartons to create a fun and playful windmill. You could also gather 10-12 and create a milk windchime. We used the directions from this website (http://www.artistshelpingchildren.org/artscraftsideaskids/milk-carton-spinning-windmills.html) and modified it for our own good.

Milk Carton Windmill--
Step 1: Drink all your milk! Empty the carton. Clean it with soapy water and let it dry.
Step 2: Decorate your milk carton! We used tissue paper, but you could paint it or cover it with construction paper.
Step 3: Staple the lid together. Poke a hole on either side and string it together.
Step 4: On each side of the container, cut 2 door-shaped pieces with a pair of scissors.
Step 5: Take outside and enjoy!

Here are some pictures of our final project!

April Students of the Month

It's April! And those Arizona winds have blown in two amazing kids to represent room 20 as Students of the Month.
Audrey loves her family, Math, and making new friends at Hulet. Damien loves the Arizona Cardinals, Tech Decks (finger skateboards), and playing basketball.
I am so happy to have Damien and Audrey help plan amazing parties (like our popsicle/party/End of Testing party). They did such a great job organizing new plans and ideas for us to grow as a community classroom!
