Pi Day!

A mathematical celebration of the symbol for Pi! 3.14 is the shorthand version of pi and is used to find the circumference of a circle. (It incidentally happens to be my birthday as well!)
So to celebrate (and work on our math skills) the students in my math class decorated pi symbols and wore them for the rest of the day. :)

Science Fair

Science fair is one of my favorite times of the year! Testing new experiments and laws of science are great ways to investigate the world around you. Sometimes it can be a consumer driven question like: Which brand of chips has the most grease? Other times it can be a world issue: Can sunlight purify dirty water? Testing these questions not only makes us better scientists, but better thinkers as well!
Take a look at some of our projects below and remember to talk to your child about their experiment and what they might have learned from it!

 

Alliterations

For the past month we have been studying various forms of figurative language. Figurative language is when you use exaggerations to describe how you are feeling. One form of figurative language uses alliteration. Alliteration is when you use the same beginning sound throughout the entire sentence. Think of them like tongue twisters! An example is: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. As you can see Peter, Piper, picked, peck, pickled, and peppers all start with the /p/ sound.

The students in room 20 were asked to create alliterations and draw a picture. Here is some of our best work.

As part of our Bully-Free week at Hulet, students have been asked to take the pledge to be bully free! Bully free isn't just about being nice to each other, but also stopping bullying when you see it happening. Too often we feel scared to intervene when bullying is occurring. But YOU can do something about it. If other students are being picked on BE BOLD and SPEAK UP!! Don't let that bully pick on a school mate of yours! Say something about it. STAND OUT and let your classmates know that you will not tolerate anyone being picked on. BE BRIGHT and make sure that everyone feels respected and safe! You can be someone's hero!

Make YOUR Move!

At Hulet we have made a lifelong commitment to be drug free, bully free, and healthy! The students in Mrs. Tremonti's 5th grade class are taking that pledge by participating in Move On, a collaboration between school in Arizona and Blue Cross/Blue Shield. The Move On Challenge requires that students eat 5 servings of fresh fruits or veggies every day, watch LESS than 2 hours of tv every day, play for at least 1 hour, and drink 0 sweetened drinks (teas, coffees, sodas). In order to get our 1 hour of physical activity every day, we have been going outside more to play basketball, walk laps, and BEING ACTIVE!

Our Solar System

For the month of January, we were studying planets and the solar system in Science. Students were given a part, a rubric, and a set of instructions. They had to create a powerpoint presentation, a poster, a travel brochure, and a 3D model.

 You may have noticed we have one planet missing: Earth. As of picture time this group was not finished with their project and were not featured in this blog. You may have also noticed that we featured Moon, Sun, and Pluto. Moon and Sun are not planets. Moon is a satellite that orbits Earth and Sun is a star. Pluto USED to be one of the planets, but since scientists discovered it orbits two different stars it is now considered a dwarf planet.

We had a great time working on these projects. I hope you enjoyed it too!
